Is your child old enough to have his or her first summer camp? And you on the other hand don’t know what to do on how you should prepare for his first summer camp? Fret no more; here are some tips on how to prepare your child on his first summer camp.
- If your child is anxious being alone in summer camp, find someone who can go and experience summer camp with him. If he has a close friend or a cousin that has the same age as him, why not have them enroll together at the same summer camp and have the same cabin. This will assure your child in his first summer camp.
- Take time to visit the camp with your child, it is an option though it would be nice for your child so that he may be familiar with the environment, cabins and the camp.
- Most summer camps will give you a checklist on what to bring on your child’s camp, make sure you have packed the things weeks in advance. You may have to put initials of your child in all of his clothing or at least some of them that is important to him. And make sure when you pack his clothes, he packs with you so that he will know what he is bringing. You let him bring his favorite stuff toy or anything that will remind him of home.
- Before he goes to summer camp, spend time talking to him and listen to what he may say, concerns or fears and so on. And make sure you let him understand that homesickness and being apprehensive about it are common when it’s your first time in summer camp.
- Assure your child that the purpose of summer camp is to have fun and learn new skills and also meet new friends so need not feel for him to be pressured. All he has to do is have fun.
